Motivation to Lose Weight
Motivation is more often than not what separates people who succeed at their goals from those who, even with the best of plans and intentions, fail. Motivation helps people push on through the difficult parts of achieving their goals and dreams. Losing weight can be very difficult, especially if you have been overweight for a long time. And, unless you invest a lot of money in expensive and sometimes dangerous surgical procedures, weight loss does not happen overnight. Finding the right motivation to lose weight can help you achieve your goals.
Making the decision to lose weight is the first part in determining your motivation. But unfortunately, just deciding to lose weight is seldom enough motivation to succeed in that goal. But you can beat the battle of the bulge with these tips for increasing your motivation to lose weight.
Accepting Yourself
Learning to love and accept yourself is an important step in having proper motivation. Many people find it difficult to put themselves and their lives in proper perspective because of the prevalence of seemingly perfect people in the media. The majority of people will never look like a supermodel or movie star, despite how much they sincerely try. Before you start trying to lose weight, it’s helpful to accept yourself for who you are and realize that you will likely never look like superstars and models. But that’s OK, you can still lose weight and drastically improve your health and reduce your risk for many serious diseases and illnesses. And you will likely look better and generally feel better as well. Your motivation to lose weight is the key to keeping you on track throughout your weight loss journey.
Focus on the Positives, not the Negatives
Unfortunately is sometimes easier to berate and belittle ourselves for all of our imperfections and faults. This is not only detrimental to your emotional wellbeing, but to your motivation to lose weight as well. Focusing on the positive helps you to realize that things really aren’t “that bad.” Try making a list of all of the “good” things you like about yourself. Even the smallest seeming things can help. Try writing about one good thing either about yourself or about something you did every day. And then read through your past entries as well, to constantly remind yourself that you are a good person and you CAN accomplish anything you set your mind to doing.
Goal Setting
Sometimes the best motivation to lose weight is having detailed, short-term goals. Having unrealistic goals such as “I want to lose 50 pounds this month,” is unhealthy and will not do you any good. Setting short-term, attainable goals gives you positive reinforcement when you’re able to achieve those goals.
